federal investigators this morning and joins you now -- and joins us now with this live report. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes, it's been almost a week since this fireball and explosion and fire here in san bruno. there are still so many questions. the ntsb is out here this morning. we're getting more information about where this investigation is headed. key among the question is how did this start, obviously and why did it burn so long? let's talk about the cause. the ntsb has been asking for anyone to come forward if they smelled gas in the days leading up to the explosion. there have been about 90 e- mails sent to the ntsb. but the ntsb said they only had one person who smelled gas and that was two or three weeks before this happened. if they didn't smell gas, that would be a clue. >> if people smell gas in advance, that suggests a failure, where gas is coming out and people smell it. that's a different kind of failure than a catastrophic failure. that would help us determine the cause of this explosion. that's why that's so crucial to us. >> reporter: there's also the

injection to the state's former practices. the availability of the drug used had to be considered. the maker of the drug has said another dose of this drug may not be available until january of 2011. the execution would be the first in nearly five years and would be the last until next year. executions have been hold on 2006, when the federal judge in san jose found the lethal injection procedures were flawed which posts a risks of causing extreme pain in violation of the ban on cruel and unusual punishment. the courts are not the last line of defense when it comes to halting executions. governor schwarzenegger could step in. legal experts say although he's pro-death penalty, every case is different. >> governors have all of the facts in front of them and they know they are the last line of defense. and so there are a lot of -- there are a lot of governors that really, really take this seriously. >> reporter: the man skimmed to be executed is albert greenwood brown convicted of raping and murdering a 15-year-old riverside girl 30 years ago. 50 people have already been in- - have already been

of the growing investigation. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us with an update. >> reporter: good morning. we've been out here since 4:00 this morning and we have been showing you how the authority is pushing the crime scene tape back. this crime lab vehicle was just -- has just been pulled into the crime scene within the last hour. this is video which we shot moments after the technicians began working. according to protocol, this shooting involved two concord officers. those officers were not hurt. those have been placed on paid administrative leave. the man officers shot and paramedics rushed to the hospital may have been a suspect wanted on several robbery warrants. they say two officers in a squad car patrolling around 2:30 noticed the man who matched the description. the officers tried to make contact along clayton road. the officers at some point in the chase got out of their squad car and an ralph the man only being described as a male in his 20s. authorities are still investigating whether the man actually opened fire on the officers. the man is at john muir medical center in walnut
